How to Measure for a Linear Slot Diffuser

Choosing a linear slot diffuser starts with measurement, but the number in a product name is not always the same as every physical dimension of the finished diffuser. Measure the opening and the surrounding installation area, then compare those measurements with the final product dimensions before ordering.

1. Expose the opening you are working with

If you are replacing an existing grille or diffuser, remove it so you can see the actual opening and mounting surface. If removal requires working around live HVAC equipment, wiring or unfamiliar construction, stop and use a qualified installer.

2. Measure the opening length and width

Measure inside edge to inside edge and record the dimensions in inches. Check more than one point if the opening is not perfectly square. Do not use only the outside dimensions of the old cover; its face may overlap the opening.

3. Record clearance and mounting conditions

Note the available depth behind the finished surface and the clearance around the opening. Nearby walls, trim, lights, cabinetry, framing and other obstructions can matter even when the nominal size looks correct. Also record whether the diffuser will be installed in a ceiling, wall or another supported location.

4. Use the Airvian catalog size as a selection starting point

Airvian organizes its standard-size matrix by length and slot count. In the catalog convention, each slot corresponds to 2 inches of nominal catalog width: 1 slot = 2 inches, 2 slots = 4 inches, and so on through 12 slots = 24 inches. Standard catalog lengths run from 6 to 84 inches, with availability varying by slot count.

A label such as 24×4 therefore describes the Airvian catalog configuration: 24-inch nominal length and 4-inch nominal catalog width, using 2 slots. It should not be treated as a promise that the finished face, neck or mounting opening measures exactly 24 by 4 inches.

5. Verify the final product dimensions

Before purchase or installation, compare your measurements with the product-specific dimensional information. Neck dimensions, face dimensions, mounting details and required clearance are separate from the catalog name and should be verified individually.

6. Do not select airflow capacity from size alone

Two outlets with similar nominal dimensions can perform differently because geometry, slot design, pressure and installation conditions affect air distribution. Air-outlet aerodynamic and sound performance should be based on validated product data rather than a size-only estimate. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 70-2023 defines laboratory methods used to test the aerodynamic performance and sound generation of air outlets and inlets.
